Gordon (spr. gohrd'n), Charles George, engl. Offizier, geb. 28. Jan. 1833 zu Woolwich, focht 1854-56 in der Krim, 1857-58 und 1860 in China, schlug 1863-64 als Oberbefehlshaber der chines. Truppen die rebellischen Tai-pings, unterwarf im Auftrage des Vizekönigs von Ägypten 1874 den Sudan, 1877-79 das. Gouverneur, 1880 Militärsekretär des Generalgouverneurs von Indien, ging Febr. 1884 im Auftrage der ägypt. und engl. Regierung zur Ordnung der Zustände im Sudan nach Chartum, wo er, von dem Mahdi eingeschlossen, nach heldenhafter Verteidigung beim Fall der Stadt 26. Jan. 1885 umkam. Von ihm »Journals at Kartoum« (1895), »Diary of the Taiping rebellion« (1890). – Biogr. von Barnes (deutsch 1885), Gordon (engl., 1886).
